Purpose of the RPK Experiment

Original post: 13 July 2009.
(Updated 17 July 2018: see PS below)
The blog posts below are a running account of an experiment that began on August 14, 1965. It has taken this long to get it this simple and for technology to be available.

The present design is a descendant of the 1980s "PK Party" (spoon bending) developed by Jack Houck. Its purpose is to experience and explain the phenomenon of remote psychokinesis and to understand its uncertainties.

We are attempting to produce an NCR (non-consensus reality) event in a CR (consensus reality) frame of reference in order to learn how to apply what physicist/psychologist Arnold Mindell calls The Edge between Physics and Psychology in his seminal work Quantum Mind, published in 2000. We believe that this process will lead us to a more mature understanding of our physical and psychological capabilities, which will in turn help us develop deeper social responsibility for our planet in terms of raising our individual and collective awareness. We believe that this will help transform societal attitudes from ideological needs to subdue, dominate or control each other or other beings of all kinds (animate and inanimate). We believe that this can happen only by partnering and supporting each other in raising our mutual awareness in creative ways.

PS. Rebecca Hardcastle Wright has given this experiment a clearer current explanation of purpose. In her Exoconscious Proposal: The Common Ground of Consciousness Science and Psychic Intelligence she writes "Today, extraterrestrial experiencers join growing numbers of vocal psychic experiencers: near death experiencers (NDE), out of body travelers (OBE), mediums, psychics and healers. Together these groups are urging, if not pushing, consciousness science to build a body of experiments and theories regarding consciousness as a non-local field. This growing psychic research has not gone unnoticed by classical scientists. Many of them are beginning to acknowledge consciousness as a fundamental field of reality... Exoconscious experiencers have living confirmation of the Extraterrestrial Presence. These experiencers have the potential to birth a social movement confirming the extraterrestrial presence. They have the power to propel the UFO/ET information mainstream in ways not possible with classical science."

First Remote PK Party

Jack Houck, inventor and developer of the PK Party

Monday, July 13, 2009.
Today Jack Houck, retired aerospace engineer with McDonnell Douglas and director of special projects (read: classified projects), called to inform me he had arranged to conduct the first remote PK Party tomorrow afternoon from his home in Huntington Beach, California. His friend and gifted psychic, Norma, would attempt to move the object in my house in Los Alamos, New Mexico, over a thousand miles away. The device had been constructed for this purpose in the mid 1980s. We speculated that having a well-established PK Party atmosphere would give the experiment the best chance for success. Many friends would be present to serve as a cheering section for Norma. My wife Birgitta and friend Quinn would join me at the appointed time in my home to witness any movement of one of the two hanging objects in a lidded, transparent cylindrical box.

For those not familiar with PK Parties, there is an excellent description of the process conducted by Jack Houck in the autobiographical book Travels, by the late popular novelist, Michael Crichton. The chapter is titled Spoon Bending. Furthermore, a Google search of "Spoon Bending" will offer many YouTube film clips of various successful PK Parties.

The first attempt to move one of the hanging objects took place today at the appointed time. Many people, young and old, were gathered at Jack Houck's house in California to help Norma make the attempt. Birgitta, Quinn and I were witnesses of the device here in New Mexico. We connected with each other in a conference call on speaker phones. At a prearranged signal the command "Move! Move! Move!" was made and the three of us in NM watched the device carefully for any signs of movement. But we saw nothing happen.

Neither of those two hanging objects gave a hint of moving.

OK, I thought, back to the drawing board! In Jack's and my respective scientific research careers, first attempts of any experiment never functioned as expected. Null events simply tell us we have to rethink our approach and try again.

Wednesday, July 15
Not so fast!! Jack called and left a voice mail message on my home phone today that an unexpected "success" had happened at his house later on Tuesday evening and he was eager to tell me about it.

Thursday, July 16
I spoke to Jack today and he described the unexpected "success". That is, his water heater sprang a leak Tuesday evening, which grew into moving the water heater off its base! He was sure this strange coincidence was connected to our experiment and was not happy about it. "No more RPK parties at my house", he declared!

As we discussed this unexpected development, we decided a PK"Party" was not the best approach, since the it was not well enough focused. In talking to Norma later, she noticed the similarity in shape of the RPK device and Jack's water heater! She also reminded Jack and me that she had warned us to be alert for a possible delayed response. We then decided it would be best to narrow our focus on her solo attempt and have video movement detection (VMD) equipment in place to record any effects at any time. We are now in process of defining and acquiring the appropriate VMD system.

Finally we have a quote on equipment that seems appropriate to our task! I have sent out an inquiry email to those who either have already expressed interest or may conceivably be interested. If anyone reading this post has not been contacted, but is interested in this project, please add a comment below or email me at enk33[at]losalamos[dot]com..

A month after accepting the above quote the video motion detection equipment arrived. I assembled it as best I could, but couldn't get it to function correctly. Finally I contacted the supplier who came to see what was the matter. It turns out that two components were defective, so he took them with him to remedy. I'm waiting for his return.

But the downtime is time not wasted, since it has allowed time to rethink the whole approach. I’m just now finishing Quantum Mind, the Edge between Physics and Psychology, by old friend Arnold Mindell (published in 2000) that is helping me see the issue—i.e., the concept of mass and matter--in a surprisingly more “shamanic” new way. [See here for Recontacting Arnold Mindell]. My last conversation with the “Crystal Group” has also helped in this.

Brief history of project.
This project began with a dream image on the morning of August 14, 1965. I was then a nuclear materials research scientist at General Atomic Corporation in La Jolla, California. [See Sighting on this blog series] I got so excited at this image and the sighting event of that afternoon, that I began working long hours on developing an experiment, which would challenge the current notions of mass and gravity. That first experimental setup was far more complex than the present design. Needless to say, in those days such an idea was too strange to be considered seriously by the scientific community and my professional and personal life soon tanked.

It took 13 years to recover enough professional credibility to try again. This time I succeeded gaining the interest of the Eyring Research Institute (ERI) in Provo, Utah, and in spring 1978 was invited to present my ideas to an ERI military-scientific task force team, which was interested in its potential military application. The resulting proposal was almost funded by the US Air Force, based at Hill AFB, north of Salt Lake City, but at the last minute they became "spooked" by potential PR risks and the potential sponsors withdrew their support.

That would seem to be the end of it except for the initiative of one of the official proposal referees, who had enthusiastically urged that the proposal be funded. Enter Jack Houck! I did not know him at the time, but when he learned that the project would go unfunded, he and his metallurgist friend Sevren Dallin decided to work on it themselves. It was Sevren's idea, Jack says, but Jack was the one who applied the idea until it produced reproducible results. That was the birth of the PK Party, and that aspect of the proposal, i.e., spoon bending, is now a matter of international public record.

Jack and I became acquainted several years later when I was engineering manager for a Brunswick Defense Corporation subsidiary in Santa Ana, California. One of Jack's physicist buddies, Bob Beck, had been a consultant for ERI during the Provo years that I was there and knew of Jack's subsequent interest in the ill-fated USAF proposal. Since I was now located in Southern California, Bob introduced me to Jack and we struck up a stimulating friendship.

This brings us to the present situation. The notion of remote PK (RPK) has not yet been responsibly demonstrated, so far as I know. It's time to do it!

The video motion detection and recording equipment is in! I'm in process of learning how to install, set it all up and to adjust the two cameras. There will be three views on the monitor screen: North camera looking east; East camera looking north and a video cam from across the room to show the overall system. The VMD system will allow selected stations from any place in the world to view the RPK device and witness the process.

This morning Joseph Dillard wrote:

That an object of a vaguely similar shape and function (they both contain "something"), i.e., the water heater, was moved in a quite extraordinary way certainly qualifies as synchronicity, at the very least. It implies that the "energy" doing the moving is not acting based on three dimensional principles of space and time or of our waking version of rationality. This force does not appear to distinguish between subjective, arational, non-spatial, non-temporal dream reality and "objective," "rational," spatial, temporal "waking reality. Because it operates more like the dream realm, in that it disregards such assumptions, that implies that to communicate with it and create a relationship with it we need to do our best to operate in its realm as well.

What that implies to me is that saying "move!" "move!" is a very consciously willful activity which mixes intention with cognitive constructs. It is not the way consciousness generally works in nature or in dreams.

Therefore, I would propose another approach: Why not turn the intention to move the target into a color, let that congeal into a shape, and interview it regarding its desire/intention to move? Questions could also be poised to the target and the surrounding environment regarding the experiment.

It seems to me that such an approach might have several advantages: 1) it tends to merge consciousness with both the instrumental energy involved as well as with the target; 2) it takes a decidedly non-waking, more dreamlike approach to reality and the experiment, which the force itself has a preference for; 3) it implies cooperation based on unity of subject (the experimenter) and object (the energy/target) rather than control and exploitation for conscious ends that may or may not communicate adequately or appropriately to the force.

The video motion detection equipment purchased over a month ago was found to be defective and has been returned to the supplier to be remedied. I expect to have it back in a week or two. But the downtime is time not wasted, since it has allowed time to rethink the whole approach. I’m just now finishing Quantum Mind, the Edge between Physics and Psychology, by old friend Arnold Mindell (published in 2000) that is helping me see the issue—i.e., the concept of mass and matter--in a surprisingly more “shamanic” new way [see Recontacting Arnold Mindell]. Joseph Dillard's Integral Deep Listening approach above had already softened me up for Mindell's monumental work. Also, my last conversation with “Crystal Group” friends Rex, Ken and Clark has helped.

The day after I entered the previous post, son Steve wrote: "Have you seen this movie yet? "

Knowing nothing about the movie, having ignored all the marketing hooks and hype for it, I had not even intended to see it until Steve wrote the above. Now curious, Birgitta and I went to see it the next day at the local theater. MY GOD!!! I can hardly believe how timely and relevant to this blog thread this film is!! Friend Jack Houck was one of the long-ago participants in the training of the RV team that the movie spoofs. The producers have obviously been privy to some really classified stuff.

Last Wednesday the vendor returned with new video surveilance camera and accompanying PC. The system is now up and running. I still have to make adjustments to position and stabilize all components and bring three cameras into focus on a split screen. Next Monday a computer expert is coming to show me how to connect everything to my PC so that selected viewers can watch the system live from their own PCs any place in the world.

This thread will end here and pick up at a new post site after the computer guy shows me how to put everything live on line. The new thread will be called Second Remote PK experiment

Kindly let me know if you want to be one of these viewers at my new email address: enk33@q.com.

Below is a photo of yours truly taken at Jack's PK Party #174 in Huntington Beach on July 28, 1987. Notice the RPK device to the left, belt high. The two hanging objects are the same as now (January 17, 2010), except the two identical spring assemblies consisted of 5 one-inch-long tiny springs hooked together. The current spring assemblies each consist of 4 one-inch-long tiny springs, so that both objects now hang at the same level an inch higher than in the 1987 photo.
